The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the
Medical Research Council's largest establishment conducting laboratory, field
based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve
the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development,
testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of
morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. To reflect changes in
national and global health priorities and new international funding
opportunities a new research portfolio has been organised under three
themes: Child Survival; Disease Control
& Elimination; Vaccinology. These themes have been selected to
target national health needs, to reinforce sub-regional and international links
and to address some of the major current priorities in the Millennium Global
Health Goals.
The Clinical Services Department (CSD) of the MRC Unit Fajara comprises a busy 42 bed ward, outpatient department, Gate (triage) clinic, X-ray department and routine diagnostic laboratories. Approximately 50,000 new patients are seen at the MRC's clinical facilities each year. Twenty four hour a day care is provided for the patients admitted to the wards while the outpatient service operates Monday to Friday during working hours.

Job Description
The Unit wishes to appoint a Junior
Paediatric Consultant to support the Head of Clinical Services at MRC Fajara.
The Clinical Services Department comprises a busy 42 bed ward, Outpatient's
Department, Gate (triage) Clinic, X-ray Department and routine diagnostic
laboratories. Approximately 50, 000 new patients are seen at the MRC's clinical
facilities each year.
The appointment is for 3 years and is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

- Salary will be in Occupational Group E3. The
salary for Occupational Group E3 is within the range 1, 012, 875 to 1, 221,
739 Dalasis
per annum after tax. This is equivalent to a salary range of $33,762 - $40, 725 per annum after tax.
Please note that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the USD figure
quoted is just given as a guide using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange
rate. The final salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience
of the successful applicant
- For displaced staff the package will include
rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees
and shipment of personal effects
Required Skills or Experience
We seek someone with:
- MB, BS, or equivalent medical qualification
- FWACP Part 2 or equivalent
- Minimum of three years experience working at
a Senior Registrar/Junior Consultant level in paediatric medicine in high
quality teaching institutions
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Excellent communication skills
- Proven experience of managing staff
- Excellent record keeping skills
- The ability to work well in a
multi-disciplinary team
- The ability to deal sensitively with the
patients
- Computer literate, e.g. Word, Excel, Email
- An interest in clinical research into the
diseases of the tropics
- Good understanding of medical audits
- Willingness to work on the on-call rota on a
regular basis
- Willingness to work flexi-time
